In Activity Based Learning we used the internet to develop our ICT skills and World Around Us knowledge. We learned about the safe use of electricity and the equipment powered by electricity in the home.
Before the invention of electricity, people used lanterns to light their homes. In class we made our own lanterns by using an empty jar and glass markers to create our own design. Our jars had a lovely stained glass effect. We put a tea-light in our jars to make it into a tea-light holder.
As part of our World Around Us topic – Discovery Detectives we tested a number of different substances to find out if they dissolved in hot water or not. We tested the same amount of each substance with the same amount of water to make each experiment a fair test. We predicted what would happen first and then tested each substance and recorded our results.
We used a hot wires set to create a simple circuit to light a bulb. We also used the circuits to create movements and sounds.
Electricity in the Home
We used old catalogues to cut out pictures of electrical equipment. We recorded the information in a spider diagram, allowing us to sort the electrical equipment into different categories.
