UNESCO
World Heritage Status
Gracehill Primary School is set in the historic Moravian Settlement of Gracehill. The centre of the village, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, part of ‘Moravian Church Settlements’. It is the first cultural World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland and was designated in July 2024. It is linked with its partner sites in Christiansfeld in Denmark, Herrnhut in Germany and Bethlehem in Pennsylvania in the USA.
Gracehill Settlement is an early example of town planning and it reflects the timeless values of education, equality, industry, tolerance, and spirituality that have been at the heart of this community since 1759. Education has always been a priority for the Moravian Church. At one time the Church ran four schools in the settlement. Gracehill Primary School is the proud descendant of these schools, the first of which was a girls school and was established in 1765.
Our school is set beside the historic core of the Settlement. We are proud that we are a stakeholder in the World Heritage site and have played and continue to play an important role in the achieving and sustaining of World Heritage Status. Our pupils are involved in the life of the village and learn about the history of Gracehill. We hope that in future years we can build strong links with the schools in our partner sites in Denmark, Germany and the USA.
